Preparing K-2 Keyboarding

Be Persistent and Consistent

Many schools throughout the nation are securing touch devices for use in K-2 classrooms. While these devices provide quick and easy access to applications for learning, they can be a barrier to the development of proper keyboarding skills necessary for testing in grade 3.

Consider for a moment your own work environment. Can you be as productive with a touch device as you can with a laptop and keyboard?

These tips will help support students in their development of proper keyboarding skills:

The Alphabet Song – Sing the song while holding up the hand that types each letter. Knowing which hand types each letter also communicates which half of the keyboard the letter is on.

Get Some Mousercise – Do not forget about the skills necessary to hold, navigate, and click (right and left) using the mouse. Try this activity.

Provide Keyboard Practice – Do some basic typing practice with computer keyboards. Be persistent and consistent in having students type letters with the correct hand. Tap the right or left shoulder as a cue as necessary.

Capital Letters – Insist that hands work together to create capital letters. Try to discourage CAPS LOCK.

Keyboard Shortcuts – Demonstrate and practice keyboard shortcuts… cut (CTRL + X)… copy (CTRL + C )… paste (CTRL + V) …undo (CTRL + Z).
