If your district uses Running Records (or a similar process) to assess student reading, then the Screencastify Chrome extension is about to make your life easier. You'll need a computer with access to both a camera and a microphone (most laptops and Chromebooks will work). If you have a desktop that lacks these, then I recommend the HUE HD Pro document camera as a reasonably-priced solution for both. Here's how to get started.
- You're almost done! When you're ready to have a student read, bring up the assessment text in your browser, then click the Screencastify icon again. In the top row, select CAM. Make sure the microphone is responding to sound (there should be moving green bars), and uncheck the Show preview window box (to avoid distracting your student). When you're ready for your student to start reading, click RECORD WEBCAM. The free version of Screencastify allows you to record up to 10 minutes of video at a time.
- After your student finishes reading, you can save and review the video. You can watch the student's eye movements as they read, get an accurate words-per-minute count, and have a video artifact that you can use with parents at conferences and/or to show student reading growth with your building administrators during evaluations.
